Shanks receives planning approval for Derby waste management plant

Resource Recovery Solutions (Derbyshire) Ltd (‘RRS’), a wholly owned subsidiary of Shanks Group plc (‘Shanks’), announces that it has received planning approval for a 190,000 tonne per annum Mechanical Biological Treatment (‘MBT’) and gasification facility at Sinfin Lane in Derby.  The facility will divert up to 96.5% of residents’ residual waste from landfill.

The Planning Inspectors decision enables RRS to move towards the financial close of a 27 year contract with Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council which is worth an estimated £400 million.

RRS will invest £130 million in the new facilities at Sinfin Lane. These will comprise an MBT plant which will extract additional recyclable materials from residual waste and produce a fuel called Solid Recovered Fuel (‘SRF’).  This fuel will then be used by an on-site gasification facility to generate enough electricity to power 14,000 homes.  This electricity is supplied to the national grid, offsetting the cost of the facility and providing an additional source of revenue for the councils.

Commenting on the decision Ian Goodfellow, Shanks UK MD said:

‘We are delighted to have received planning permission for the Sinfin Lane plant and to move towards financial close with Derbyshire County Council and Derby City Councils. We firmly believe our proposed solution is the most sustainable and cost effective way to divert residents’ residual waste from landfill.  In addition the facility will increase the region’s recycling and recovery rates and generate a significant amount of energy.

“We very much look forward to working with the Councils and local residents to make this a reality.”
